Artificial Intelligence for Surgical Training

Using AI to make surgical education objective and scalable, and to model expert behaviour for future autonomy.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform surgical education by providing objective, scalable, and data-driven assessment of technical performance. Our research develops AI methods that analyse surgical workflows, instrument motion, and procedural execution to provide meaningful feedback that supports trainees, educators, and clinical training programmes.

Beyond education, understanding how expert surgeons perform complex procedures provides valuable insight into the development of intelligent robotic assistance and surgical autonomy. By modelling expert behaviour and analysing procedural data, we aim to create AI systems that both enhance surgical training and contribute to the next generation of clinically trustworthy autonomous surgical technologies.
